Fourth International Conference on Social Sciences and the Internet
When: August 24, 2017 (Thursday)
Where: Utrecht, Academy Building (Directions »»)
Programme »» (will be made available in due time)
More and more social interactions are taking place online. This is evidenced by the unprecedented success of online markets such as eBay and social media platforms such as Facebook or Twitter. But internet technologies have not only changed the way we interact with our peers; in recent years, more and more e-commerce and e-government platforms have relied on interactions with and information shared by consumers, citizens and organizations. Although digitalization has provided great opportunities for governments, businesses and individuals to pursue their goals, it has also created new challenges and threats to open societies. Digital divide, automation, erosion of privacy, fake news, cybercrime, etc. are just a few negative side products of digitalization.
In the light of these major technological and societal developments, it has become more necessary than ever that researchers from the humanities, social sciences and engineering pool their expertise to design and implement institutions for the open (information) societies of the 21st century.
This conference brings together humanities scholars, social, behavioural, computer and data scientists interested in the study of human behaviour, social interaction and governance in online contexts. With this meeting we aim to further the development of an international community of researchers from various fields who study internet related topics and address the opportunities and challenges of digitalization. Aiming for an interdisciplinary mix of participants, the conference will provide ample opportunity for discussion in an informal atmosphere. We thus invite submissions of extended abstracts (300 words) on any of the above mentioned or related topics.
